The incident took place in the 18th over of RCB’s innings when David smashed Hardik Pandya for a massive six over deep mid-wicket. The impact of the shot deformed the ball, forcing the umpire to call for a replacement. However, when a box of used balls was brought onto the field, David picked one up and began examining it.
Despite repeated instructions from the umpire to return the ball, David continued handling it for a brief period, visibly frustrating the official. After some delay, he eventually handed the ball back.
According to an official IPL statement, David was penalized for breaching Article 2.4 of the Code of Conduct, which relates to disobeying an umpire’s instructions. The statement further revealed that a second similar incident occurred in the 20th over (19.2), where David again failed to promptly return the ball to the umpires.
“Tim David admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction,” the statement confirmed.
Earlier in the match, Royal Challengers Bengaluru posted a formidable total of 240/4, powered by half-centuries from captain Rajat Patidar, Phil Salt, and Virat Kohli. It was the second-highest team total of the IPL 2026 season.
In response, Mumbai Indians managed 222/5, falling short by 18 runs as RCB secured a convincing victory.
