Tim Cahill on the 'bittersweet' experience of David Moyes' Everton departure to Manchester United

Tim Cahill has opened up on David Moyes’ departure from Everton and why it was a “bittersweet” experience.

The Scotsman oversaw 516 matches while in charge of the Blues after arriving from Preston North End in 2002 to replace Walter Smith.

Everton only finished outside the top half of the table in two of Moyes' 10 full seasons in charge, with the Blues securing a place in the Champions League back in 2005.

But after 11 years at Goodison Park, Moyes was appointed as United manager in 2013 as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The move was met with mixed views from Everton supporters, with some critical of the way Moyes opted to leave the club.

And Cahill believes the reason for the reaction from some supporters was because they never thought he would leave the club.

“I think when you are a Blue and have such an amazing time with a manager it is how he left,” he said in an Instagram Q&A with Jamie Carragher.

“Even though he left well, I remember flying in for his final game, I think the fans didn’t expect him to leave. It was the same with Mikel Arteta and Joleon Lescott. It is bittersweet and a double edged sword.

“I don’t agree with the stick but that is football. He brought stability and he did as much as he could for the club but they wanted to see him leave.

“It was bittersweet.”
