Tim Cahill makes 'formal' celebration apology celebration and details Carlo Ancelotti Everton invitation

Tim Cahill has opened up on the origins of his famous celebration - and the impression Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti had when the pair recently met.

The former Australia international became a hero during his time at Goodison Park with a number of important goals after making the move to Goodison Park from Millwall in the summer of 2004.

The midfielder eventually bagged 68 strikes during his time on Merseyside before moving to New York Red Bulls in 2012 - with many of those goals being followed by the same boxing celebration at the corner flag.

And Cahill has now described the origin of that celebration and talked of his immense pride to see children replicating it in their own games.

The 40-year-old told Sky Sports: "I'll make a formal apology right now for every corner flag I've hit in my career!

"It came from Australia. A close friend of mine I used to play with, Archie Thompson, did a kung fu celebration and I collaborated and just choreographed it a bit better.

"I was lucky enough after so many games, we went on a bit of a losing run with Everton, we were playing Sunderland away and I scored in the 92nd minute.

"It was the perfect time to bring out the celebration, and it's stuck ever since! I'm so proud of it because I see kids in the streets doing it and on FIFA celebrations as well. It makes me very proud.

"It just naturally had a progression. In the World Cup in 2006 I did it at the time when I was the first ever goalscorer for Australia in the World Cup.

"It just stayed with me. When you see kids do it, it sparked something in me to continue it and have a laugh with it.

"Ever since it's been something so special."

Cahill was taking part in a question and answer session on Instagram with Sky Sports, which invited fans to submit queries on a number of topics.

The former Everton midfielder was also asked about the current situation at Goodison, and what he made of Ancelotti's appointment as manager.

And the Australian had a brilliant story to go along with his answer.

He added: "Carlo Ancelotti, to have him at our football club...I bumped into him when I was there a few months back, what a gentleman!

"He drove past me, saw me, reversed, gave me a big hug and told me I could come in whenever I want. That's what the club is all about.

"Unfortunately for Marco Silva, he was a great manager but had some difficult times. I think he needed to be more open and embrace the fans.

"You see the personality of Ancelotti, the aura he carries and the respect. He's won the fans over which is important because they're a big part of the football club.

"Overall the club is going to go better than what it is now. I'm looking forward to seeing where we can take it if football does recommence after this coronavirus."
