Tim Cahill and Leon Osman address Lucas Digne red card for Everton against Southampton

Everton favourites Tim Cahill and Leon Osman have given their take on Lucas Digne's red card against Southampton.

The former Blues pair were in the MOTD2 studio last night as they assessed the 2-0 defeat away to Saints.

In the second half, Digne  was chasing Kyle Walker-Peters back when he landed with his studs on the opposition man's ankle as he tried to track the run.

Carlo Ancelotti insists it "was unfortunate contact and the red card was not fair".

The boss has indicated Everton will appeal the decision, which currently leaves Digne with a three-match ban.

Speaking about the sending off, Cahill said: "He could have slowed down.

"It’s an accident and it doesn’t look great but I can understand why Ancelotti is unhappy. It comes down to interpretation."

While Osman added: "I can see why it was given but I do think it’s an accident and he catches him.

"He is running back and Walker-Pieters’ foot is just in the way Lucas Digne is running.

"But you can’t argue it isn’t dangerous, you can’t argue."

Ben Godfrey made his full debut for the Blues at right-back after impressing from the bench in the derby.

It was a tricky afternoon for him as the home side looked to attack down that flank.

On the new recruit's performance, Osman said: "Godfrey is a good young player and he has a lot of potential but he is a centre-back.

"He only passed to James Rodriguez four times in the game and he passed to Yerry Mina 18 times.

"You compare that to Coleman passing to James 43 times in the first few games of the season. It showed you how Everton’s attacking threat changed."

Everton have until 1pm today to officially begin the appeal process over Digne’s red card.
