CHICAGO _ Carlos Rodon was rocked. Eloy Jimenez was injured. Jose Abreu was confused.
And yet, there the White Sox were, celebrating wildly at home plate after a 12-11 walk-off win against the Tigers late Friday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
In the middle of the mob was Tim Anderson, who hit a solo home run to left field with two outs in the ninth against Tigers reliever Joe Jimenez before firing his bat toward the Sox dugout.
The blast capped a comeback from seven-run deficits of 8-1 and 9-2 and was the last of the night's many storylines.
Things looked grim in the third inning when Eloy Jimenez raced back to the left-field wall, attempting to rob Grayson Greiner of a two-run homer. The prized Sox slugger jumped and tried to plant his right foot in the wall to propel him for a leaping catch attempt.
The ball landed in the bullpen, and Jimenez fell and remained down for a few moments before being helped off the field.
He exited with a right ankle sprain, the Sox announced. X-rays were negative for a fracture, according to the team. He'll be reevaluated Saturday. He'll have an MRI as part of the standard procedure, a Sox official said.
Jimenez had just been reinstated earlier Friday after being placed on the bereavement list on April 22. He went to his hometown of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, following the death of his grandmother, Flora Sanchez.
"It was a little bit hard to say bye, but she's in my heart all the time," Jimenez said before the game.
Jimenez singled to center in his only plate appearance Friday. In his first 21 games in the major leagues, Jimenez has a .241 batting average with three home runs and eight RBIs in 79 at-bats.
The Sox mounted a major comeback without Jimenez.
With the Sox trailing 11-9 in the seventh inning, Abreu hit what appeared to be a go-ahead three-run homer. But he passed Anderson, who had been holding near first base to see if he should tag up on the high fly ball, between first and second. After a replay review, Abreu was called out on the bases and credited with a two-run single that gave the Sox an 11-10 lead.
But before Anderson's blast, it appeared as if Abreu's missing run might prove costly.
The Tigers' Ronny Rodriguez almost immediately tied the score 11-11 with a solo homer in the eighth off Kelvin Herrera. The game featured nine home runs, five for the Tigers and four for the Sox, including a previous two-run homer by Abreu and solo shots by Yonder Alonso and Jose Rondon. It was only appropriate it ended on a walk-off homer.
Rodon had his worst start of the season, allowing three of the homers on his way to eight earned runs in three innings. His ERA jumped from 2.89 before the game to 4.95 after.
And after all that, now the Sox await the next update on Jimenez.
