Tim Anderson headed to injured list with high ankle sprain; Yoan Moncada suffers bruised knee

BOSTON _ The White Sox will place shortstop Tim Anderson on the injured list with a high right ankle sprain, though the extent of the injury remains uncertain for now.

Anderson left the clubhouse Wednesday morning for an MRI and was unavailable to speak with the media before the game. Anderson suffered the injury in the fifth inning of Tuesday night's game and had to be helped off the field. The Sox said X-rays were negative.

Leadoff man Leury Garcia, the regular center fielder, was in Wednesday's lineup at shortstop against Red Sox starter Chris Sale. Manager Rick Renteria said he'll use Garcia and Jose Rondon at short for the time being.

"Quite honestly, it might give (Garcia) a little break," he said. "His legs are barking a little bit. It might help him a little to bring him into the infield."

Playing one man short, the Sox had another stroke of bad luck in the first inning when Yoan Moncada was hit in the right knee by a Sale pitch. Moncada stayed in the game but was removed after running to third on Jose Abreu's double.

Yolmer Sanchez pinch ran for Moncada and went to second, with Rondon moving to third. The Sox announced Moncada was day to day with a bruised right knee.

Veteran shortstop Alcides Escobar is hitting .294 at Triple-A Charlotte, but Renteria said there have been no discussions yet of bringing him up.

"With Leury and Jose being able to play shortstop, I have some flexibility," he said. "So right now it's not necessarily a pressing need."

Renteria also announced the Sox will move starters Ivan Nova and Lucas Giolito back a day to Saturday and Sunday, leaving an opening for Friday's series opener against the Twins at Guaranteed Rate Field.
