Tim Anderson and Luis Robert homer twice to lead the White Sox to a 7-2 victory against the Tigers, but catcher Yasmani Grandal exits early with lower back stiffness

CHICAGO _ Tim Anderson and Luis Robert homered twice Monday, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 7-2 victory against the Detroit Tigers at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Yoan Moncada and Danny Mendick also homered as the Sox opened the four-game series with a bang.

The Sox are back over .500 (12-11), but it wasn't all good news for the team. Catcher Yasmani Grandal left in the sixth inning with lower back stiffness after fielding a ball hit in front of the plate by Austin Romine and throwing to first for the out.

The Sox said Grandal is day to day.

Grandal was part of Sunday's fifth-inning power display against the St. Louis Cardinals, when the Sox tied a major-league record with four consecutive home runs.

The homers started earlier Monday for the Sox when Anderson and Moncada began the first inning with back-to-back shots off Matthew Boyd.

It was the second time in less than a week the Sox started the game with consecutive home runs. Anderson and Eloy Jimenez went back-to-back Wednesday against Boyd and the Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit.

The Sox became the first team in the modern era to hit consecutive home runs to start a game twice within a five-game span, according to Elias. The previous shortest span since 1900 was by the 2018 Los Angeles Dodgers, who did it twice in a 10-game span.

Monday's first-inning blast gave Anderson seven career leadoff home runs.

Anderson hit his second home run of the game one inning later on the ninth pitch of the at-bat. It's the fourth multi-homer game of Anderson's career, with his last coming May 26, 2018 at Detroit.

Robert and Mendick hit solo home runs in the sixth, and Robert added a two-run home run in the eighth. It was the first multi-homer game of Robert's career.

Gio Gonzalez allowed two runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in 4? innings.

Codi Heuer pitched a scoreless sixth inning and was credited with the win.

Grandal's departure comes with the Sox already missing second baseman Nick Madrigal (separated left shoulder), infielder/outfielder Leury Garcia (sprained left thumb), starting pitchers Reynaldo Lopez (right shoulder soreness) and Carlos Rodon (left shoulder soreness) and key reliever Aaron Bummer (left biceps strain).

Grandal was one of the big free-agent additions this offseason, signing a four-year, $73 million deal in November.
