TikToker shares grandma's 50p hack to keep clothes smelling fresh 'for 20 years'

A woman has shared her grandma's easy hack for keeping clothes smelling fresh in drawers - and it works for "15 to 20 years". There's no need for expensive washing power - the simple trick costs as little as 50p.

She took to social media to share the tip with others after being told about it by her grandma and trying it out herself. Tik Tok user Julia posted a video under her username @_boringbb_ explaining that she had noticed something unexpected while looking through her grandma's clothing collection.

When she asked why there was a wrapped bar of soap in every drawer, her grandma said they keep her garments fresh, reported The Mirror. The video, which can be viewed below, has more than 623,000 views and hundreds of shares as TikTokers praised the idea.

In the 30-second clip, Julia said: "Did anyone else rip out those magazine fragrance testers and shove them in your drawers to keep your clothes smelling nice? I did, up until a few months ago.

"I was over at my grandma's house and she pulls out this bar of soap [from her drawer] and I was like, 'why do you have that in there?' She was like, 'Oh honey, you didn't know that's how you keep your clothes smelling nice?'

"Apparently, if you take a nice, neutral, wrapped bar of soap - this one is lavender but you can use cotton or whatever - it'll last 15 to 20 years. I had no idea, but I tried it out for a few months and it's amazing. My clothes smell amazing. Definitely give it a go."

Bars of soap vary in price, but Asda has four packs of Imperial Leather bars for £2 - 50p each - or Palmolive bars for £1. Scented soaps, such as lavender, start from £2.30 per bar at Asda and Tesco.

In the comments on the post, Julie pointed out that the tip works best if the soap is in paper wrapping, as the scent will be more noticeable than a boxed or plastic wrapped bar. Many people praised the hack, with one writing: "This is such a cool idea!"

Another posted: "I have been influenced! Definitely going to give this a try." Another commented: "I have little hotel soap bar in every drawer, it smells amazing."

One TikToker shared: "My mom and grandma do this with dove soap. I stared doing it a year ago and love it lol." Some else wrote: "My grandma taught me this too."

A user suggested: "This also prevents moths! Make a small rip in the packaging. Plastic packaging prevents the smell from going out."
