TikTok warning from Co Down MLA over 'disturbing' challenges

Parents in Co Down have expressed fears over 'worrying' challenges on TikTok.

It's reported that primary school children in Downpatrick have been alerted to the specific challenge by their friends.

A statement sent to a local MLA said: "If they are the last to do the challenge either someone nasty will come to their homes, or they will have to take their own lives. With schools being closed we cannot get the concern out through the teachers."

SDLP MLA for South Down Colin McGrath told Belfast Live: "This is a worrying development that underlines the dangers of social media and the crucial importance of parents being aware of their children usage.

"The internet should not be banned to children - it’s good immensely outweighs it’s bad - but parents must know what site their children access and what type of content they can encounter on it.

"It is important too that sites move quickly to remove inappropriate intent which I understand this site has done. Let’s hope it doesn’t re-emerge again."

In a PSNI warning on Wednesday, they advised parents to keep an eye on their children when using social media platforms.

Police Fermanagh and Omage Twitter posted: "Just had a private message from a concerned parent regarding the 'Blue Whale Challenge'. If you don't know what it is, its a disturbing challenge aimed at teenagers to get them to self harm. Please keep an eye on your children's social feeds."
