TikTok star with 1million followers shares how much money she makes from the app

A TikTok star who quit her job to become a full-time content creator says she now makes £100,000 a year through the app.

Vi Luong, a 24-year-old who shares life hack videos to her 1.1million followers, says she can make up to $8,000 (£5,833) and $10,000 (£7,291) for every sponsored video she posts.

When she started working with brands, she charged around $3,000 (£2,187) and $4,000 (£2,916).

Vi, who lives in California, says she started out by posting "how-to" content and tips for people who want a career in social media.

She says she quit her $43,000-a-year (£32,000) job in social media marketing just ten months after joining TikTok as her videos started going viral.

Speaking to Business Insider, Vi said: "I started out by taking a handful of deals a month, but it can be a real time and energy suck.

"Instead, what I prioritise is high-paying, minimum five-figure deals for brands I genuinely love. I only do a couple of those a month."

Vi explained how her income comes from both brand partnerships and the Creator Fund, which is a scheme set up by TikTok.

The Creator Fund allows users to earn money through popular videos - but you can only sign up if you’re aged 18 or over, you have at least 10,000 followers and have had 100,000 authentic video views in the last 30 days.

The amount Vi can make from the Creator Fund varies depending on how much she posts, but she says she makes roughly $150 (£110) to $300 (£220) a month from this service.

Vi says her top performing videos so far include do-it-yourself clothing hacks which have racked up 11 million views.

Her other most-watching content includes a post on the top photo-editing apps, which was watched by 1.5 million people, and a video on how to take Instagram photos on an iPhone, which got 2.9 million views.

Throughout this year, Vi, who started posting on TikTok in 2019, says she has done on average about four to seven sponsored deals a month.

Three of these are year-long deals that she has to post about every month in order to get paid.

Vi also has an Instagram account with 94,000 followers and a YouTube channel with 7,000 followers.

Vi Luong's sponsorship earnings for 2021 so far

  • February: about $19,000 (£13,880)
  • March: about $30,000 (£21,920)
  • April: about $32,000 (£23,380)
  • May: about $1,000 (£730 - Vi said May was an anomaly because some payments were delayed)
  • June: about $32,000 (£23,380)
  • July: about $17,000 (£12,420)
