TikTok doctor’s at-home light hack for a better night’s sleep

A TikTok doctor has gone viral for explaining how to ensure you get a good night’s sleep by doing one thing every evening.

Thousands of people in Ireland have trouble with winding down and sleeping at night and often resort to medicinal aid.

Dr. Karan Rajan says our eyes pick up even the smallest amount of light later in the day which can then leave us feeling more alert than ready to nod off.

Posting the video on TikTok, he advised: “Use this piece of information to be more alert in the day and sleep better at night.

“There’s a part at the back of the eye called the retina and this is where light hits and influences our brain.”

He went on to say that: “At the start of the day in the morning the retinal sensitivity is very low so we need a lot of light to energise our bodies, function optimally, and wipe away the sleepiness.

“Our retinol sensitivity increases throughout the day, so in the evening and night time, it is very high.

“That means that even a small amount of light makes us alert and that’s bad because at night we want to go to bed.”

His solution to this is to lower the lights in the lead-up to bedtime to allow your body to mellow down and get a better night’s sleep.

“So in the evening hours, you need to start the process of reducing the light gradually.

“Dim lights as low as possible and turn off any you don’t need.”
