TikTok could be banned in the USA unless its owning company sells the social media platform, reports the BBC. The platform is already banned from devices operated by US Government employees and officials and could be banned from Government devices in the UK.
It is also banned on official devices in the EU and Canada because of security fears.
The app is owned by Chinese company ByteDance and is accused of posing a national security risk amid dears the data gathered from millions of users could be passed to the Chinese Government.
A request for a change in ownership, first reported in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), has been confirmed by TikTok.
A spokesperson for TikTok said: "A change in ownership would not impose any new restrictions on data flows or access."
TikTok is moving all US-based data to the US as part of an initiative it calls Project Texas.
A week ago the senate announced new legislation that would give the president the power to ban TikTok - and any other foreign-owned company that poses a national security risk.
