TikTok-approved mascara with 27,000 Amazon reviews gives ‘sky high’ lashes for under £8

In the realm of viral makeup sensations, few products have captured the hearts and peepers of thousands of beauty buffs quite like Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara. The budget mascara has amassed more than 23,000 reviews from shoppers - and remains to be one of Amazon’s best-selling products in the cosmetics category.

Soon after its launch in 2021, the drugstore lash product skyrocketed to the top of the charts after going viral on TikTok for delivering gravity-defying lashes. Adored by beauty enthusiasts and influencers alike, this mascara has become the secret weapon for achieving flawless, fluttery lashes that almost seem too good to be true.

Some might say that whiling away my spare time scrolling through TikTok videos is something of a bad habit - but the products I’ve discovered through the video sharing app more than make up for time wasted in money saved. And this is definitely one of them.

With its innovative formula and unique brush design, Maybelline’s Sky High mascara promises to deliver ‘full volume and a limitless length look’, which is unique in itself as mascara’s tend to offer one or the other, proving that the lash game has been forever changed by the American beauty brand.

The packaging is nice in a metallic lilac colour, and the ‘flex tower’ brush is the plastic comb style, which is my preferred applicator compared to the bristly type. I applied one layer from root to tip and was impressed with the flexibility of the tapered wand as it worked to capture even the smallest of lashes.

Maybelline said: “Sky High lash impact from every angle. Our exclusive Flex Tower mascara brush bends to volumise and extend every single lash from root to tip. Washable mascara formula infused with bamboo extract and fibres for long, full lashes that never get weighed down.”

When I pulled out the brush, it wasn’t crammed with product, but has a nice, even coating. It is, however, quite a wet formula, so not one that you want to sneeze straight after using. I’ve found that it does dry down to the perfect consistency after a week or so of regular use, so even if you’re not keen on the first go, it’s well worth the perseverance.

That said, you can work the formula to your advantage if you work quickly. Instead of letting it dry between coats, add two to three layers of mascara to achieve both jaw-dropping length and volume.

My lashes looked longer than they truly are, thanks to the bamboo extract and fibres that offer weightless length and thickness, without looking all spidery. They didn’t stick together or clump up to leave me looking like a 90s throwback, nor did I get it all over my face in the application process either, which ticks some pretty big boxes for me.

Even adding it to my lower lashes - Gen Z, please don’t come for me - it didn’t transfer onto my under eye, and left me with brighter, larger-looking peepers with fluttery lashes. What more can you ask for from a mascara that currently costs under £8.

Originally retailing at £9.99, the mascara now carries a retail price of £11.99 - however, it’s very regularly on offer for well below its introductory price tag. Currently at Boots, the mascara is down to £9.59 , but it’s cheaper still at Amazon for £7.90 , ahead of the Amazon Prime Day event.

The two-day sale, set to be held from July 11-12, will see hundreds of products reduced for members, and there’s a good chance this often-reduced mascara could be included. According to Trolley.co.uk - a MoneySavingExpert approved comparison site - Amazon’s price is currently the cheapest available.

But over on CamelCamelCamel , which allows you to check the price history of products sold on Amazon, it reveals it’s previously been reduced to as little as £6.33. Although, £7.90 is still great value for this mascara’s performance.

Wearing the mascara throughout the day, it was very comfortable, leaving my lashes still feeling flexible rather than brittle. As such, there’s no wonder that the beauty buy has been constantly in and out of stock for the last two years.

On Amazon, the viral sensation has racked up more than 27,000 ratings, over 19,000 of which are five stars.

One said: “My eyelashes are not very long, but after using this, (3 coats on each lash) I could not believe the length of my lashes. The product does not leave your lashes clumpy but long and naturally looking. So I will be ditching all the other mascara that I have paid so much for and will be sticking with this one in fact I am in the process of ordering another one.”

Another compared it to a TooFaced mascara that retails at £25, writing: “This mascara is amazing quality - very similar to the TooFaced mascara which is far far more expensive than this one. An amazing dupe.”

While a third loved the look, but found it a bit tricky to remove, saying: “I cannot praise this product enough. I have naturally long, curly lashes and this mascara gets me compliments everywhere I go. To the point where people think I've used a serum or have extensions. Is a bit harder to get off than other mascaras and I seem to go through it quicker than normal (my mum found this too) but would definitely recommend 100%!”

The formula definitely is on the more challenging side to remove, but nowhere near as bad as the time I almost cried trying to get Aldi’s waterproof mascara off. The Maybelline product isn’t a face-wipe-and-go situation and does require the attention of a double cleanse to make it a much more effortless job.

When it comes to mascara, I’ve never really stayed loyal to a brand. Rimmel, Benefit, Collection, No7 - I’ve tried dozens and nothing wooed me enough to lock them down as a holy grail. But this Maybelline one could just be it.

It's not the only mascara to be reduced ahead of Prime Day, though, with a number of other best-loved brands also seeing price reductions. The Max Factor False Lash Effect Volumising Mascara is now £6.10 down from £12.99, while the Telescopic Mascara by L'Oreal Paris was £10.99 now £8.42. But the cheapest we've found has to be the Rimmel London Extra Super Lash Volumising Mascara at just £2.90, compared to is usual £4.99 price tag.

You can get your hands on the cut-price Maybelline Sky High mascara on Amazon for £7.90 while it's still in stock. Or shop more early Prime Day offers here.
