Tigers-Yankees doubleheader now June 4 after Sunday's postponement

DETROIT _ As expected, the split doubleheader between the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon was postponed, continuing an early-season trend which has wreaked havoc around the major leagues _ and especially in Detroit.

The rainouts were the Tigers' fifth and sixth postponements of the season.

With heavy rain and just above freezing temperatures forecast throughout Sunday afternoon, Game 1 was called off around 11 a.m. Around 1 p.m., so, too, was Game 2.

The two teams will reconvene on June 4 at Comerica Park, as part of a split doubleheader. The first game will begin at 1:10 p.m., the second game at 7:10 p.m.

The rescheduling is not ideal for either the Tigers or Major League Baseball: June 4 is the first day of the 2018 MLB draft, of which the Tigers hold the No. 1 overall pick.

The Yankees would have preferred to play a straight doubleheader, affording them more travel flexibility. But the Tigers were not interested, because the Yankees are perhaps the biggest draw in baseball, and with a straight doubleheader, the Tigers would lose a second game of ticket sales.

All tickets for the game originally scheduled for Saturday, which was postponed until Sunday night, will be valid for the first game on June 4. All tickets for Sunday afternoon's game will be valid for the second game.

Fans unable to attend the rescheduled game may exchange their tickets at any time for any future similar-or-lesser priced regular season game in the next year, excluding Opening Day 2019.

The Tigers' starting rotation will go forward like this: Left-hander Francisco Liriano on Tuesday against the Orioles, lefty Matt Boyd on Wednesday and righty Jordan Zimmermann on Thursday.

With this weekend's postponements, the Tigers get an early-season breather, though they certainly would prefer to be getting into the regular routine of the season. They are off on Monday, affording them a three-day break.
