The Tigers have made a trade to upgrade their bench.
Before Tuesday night's game against the Braves, the team acquired Braves infielder Erick Aybar for infielder Mike Aviles and minor league catcher Kade Scivicque.
Aybar, 32, is an 11-year veteran with extensive experience at shortstop. This season, he is hitting .242 in 97 games. He is two years removed from his only All-Star appearance, with the Angels in 2014. Aybar won the AL Gold Glove Award at shortstop in 2011.
Aybar will serve as additional insurance at shortstop with Jose Iglesias out and likely will get the bulk of action up the middle in his absence. Iglesias hit the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain on Friday.
Aviles struggled in split duty as one of the team's two utilitymen this season. In 68 games, Aviles is hitting .210 with one home run and six RBIs. He has played six positions this season.
Aviles, 35, is a lifetime .262 hitter in nine seasons. He joined the Tigers in the off-season, signing a $2 million contract for 2016.
Scivicque, 23, is hitting .282 with six home runs and 41 RBIs in 105 games this season for Class A Lakeland.
