Tigers to place Cameron Maybin on DL with thumb sprain

SEATTLE _ Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said outfielder Cameron Maybin will be placed on the disabled list.

"I guess they call it a Grade 2 sprain," Ausmus said of tests that revealed a more serious injury to Maybin's left thumb. "A little bit more significant than originally thought.

"We'll have a corresponding move tomorrow. He's available tonight if we need him to pinch run or play the outfield or something.

"If we don't put him in the game tonight, we can backdate it five days," Ausmus said. "We're hoping it's in the range of 15 days that he'll be on the DL, so another 10 days or so. We won't know until we get a little bit closer."

Ausmus said the Tigers will announce a corresponding move Wednesday, when Maybin goes on the DL. He said it will "most likely" be a position player, but wasn't sure.

"We have two guys that can play center right now," Ausmus said, referring to Andrew Romine and Tyler Collins. "It's not a huge rush, but we're going to need another body for sure. We just don't know who that's going to be right now."

Alex Presley, 31, can play all three outfield positions. He played in 47 games for the Milwaukee Brewers this season, but batted .198. He's batted .279 over 26 games with the Mud Hens.

Anthony Gose has been hitting better lately at Double-A Erie, but Dave Littlefield, director of player development for the Tigers, told the Free Press this morning that they need to see more consistency out of him.

Maybin said he's going to get another opinion "just to make sure it's not any worse."

"It is what it is, man," Maybin said. "Keep my body in shape and be ready to go in a couple of weeks hopefully."

Maybin had just found out the results of an CT scan and MRI, so he wasn't sure what the next step would be or what the treatment plan would be for the injury.

"I just want to be positive that it is what they say it is and take it from there," he said.

Maybin said he's been in a lot of pain and was trying to see if he could play through it.

"I was in that much pain for a reason," Maybin said. "We've got a lot of good guys, you know, will step in and continue to hopefully fill the void. I think we should be okay. Just gotta stay ready. We've got some important games down the stretch when I do get back."
