The Detroit Tigers have placed left fielder Justin Upton on the bereavement list, according to the MLB.com transaction wire.
The bereavement list was created in 2007 to allow a player to attend to a serious illness or death in his (or his spouse's) immediate family. When placed on the bereavement list, the player has to miss a minimum of three games and a maximum of seven games.
The Tigers can dip into their 40-man roster to take Upton's spot on the active roster.
The team has not announced a corresponding move.
An All-Star in 2015 with the San Diego Padres, Upton signed a six-year, $132.75 contract with the Tigers last winter.
In his first season in Detroit, he has struggled, batting .235 with an on-base-percentage of .289 and slugging percentage of .381, all well below his career averages of .269/.348/.467. He has nine home runs and 38 RBIs in 356 plate appearances over 85 games. His 112 strikeouts are the fourth-most in the majors.
