MINNEAPOLIS _ The Detroit Tigers scored enough insurance runs to beat the Minnesota Twins.
Victor Martinez and Alex Presley hit RBI singles and Twins lefty Craig Breslow gave up a bases-loaded walk to Ian Kinsler in the ninth.
The Tigers beat the Twins, 9-6, at Target Field this afternoon and finished 4-3 on the road trip.
The insurance runs in the ninth were key because Bruce Rondon gave up a two-run single to Joe Mauer in the eighth.
Jose Iglesias and Kinsler had RBI singles in the eighth inning.
Left-handed closer Justin Wilson got the final four outs for the Tigers, but not before allowing a solo home run to Brian Dozier in the bottom of the ninth.
Shane Greene won an epic, 13-pitch battle with Eduardo Escobar to get out of a bases-loaded jam and preserve a one-run lead in the seventh inning.
Iglesias, who hit a two-run home run to snap a 2-2 tie in the seventh, finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two scored for the Tigers. Kinsler went 3-for-5 a walk, two RBIs and run scored.
Greene, who made his American League-leading 48th appearance, had not allowed a run this month. He replaced lefty Matthew Boyd with one on and none out in the seventh and gave up a walk to Mauer, the pinch-hitter, then a bunt single to Max Kepler to load the bases.
But once pinch-hitter Jason Castro struck out looking at a slider, the Tigers had a chance to get out of the inning unscathed when Zach Granite hit a grounder to Kinsler.
But the veteran second baseman made an error and the Twins pulled to within a run.
Greene struck out Dozier with the bases reloaded, then struck out Escobar, who had hit a game-tying two-run home run in the third off Boyd.
Iglesias hit a two-run home run to left-center off Twins right-hander Trevor Hildenberger to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning. Iglesias' pop was estimated at 421 feet and was his third home run of the season.
Boyd struck out a career-high eight batters over six-plus innings. He gave up two runs on five hits and three walks.
Boyd was pitching in place of fellow southpaw Daniel Norris, who left with a trainer in a rehab start today with the Toledo Mud Hens in Rochester, N.Y.
Twins lefty Adalberto Mejia allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out five.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Twins tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Iglesias and Kinsler hit back-to-back singles and then, with one out, Justin Upton hit an RBI double on a line drive to center. Kinsler scored on a missed catch error by Chris Gimenez and Upton advanced to third on a throwing error by Mejia.
James McCann went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a walk and two runs scored. Alex Presley extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the seventh and finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI.
Upton finished 2-for-4 with a RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera returned to the lineup after missing one game with a right clavicle contusion. Cabrera went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts today and 3-for-23 (.130) during the road trip.
