Tigers offense stays hot in 9-4 win over Twins

MINNEAPOLIS _ Miguel Cabrera didn't hit for the cycle, but he finished with the 44th four-hit game of his career.

Cabrera hit a solo home run in the first inning and helped spark a five-run third inning with a two-out RBI double.

The Detroit Tigers went on to beat the Minnesota Twins, 9-4, Wednesday at Target Field. The Tigers improved to 9-2 against the Twins this season, 5-0 at Target Field.

Cabrera finished 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored _ and a triple shy of the cycle. His last triple came against the Twins, at Comerica Park on May 17 in a 7-2 win.

Cabrera grounded out to third in the seventh and hit a double to right in the ninth.

The 44th four-hit game ties Cabrera for 29th in MLB history with former Tiger Ivan Rodriguez, Al Oliver and Lloyd Waner.

J.D. Martinez extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an RBI single in the third inning and finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Martinez is batting .456 (26-for-57) during the hitting streak.

Justin Upton hit a three-run home run in the third inning and finished 2-for-5. Upton has gone 8-for-16 (.500) with three home runs and nine RBIs over his last four games.

Lefty Matt Boyd started out shaky with a 28-pitch first inning for the Tigers. He gave up an RBI single to Trevor Plouffe to score Brian Dozier and tie the game, 1-1.

But he settled down and tied a single-game career-high with seven strikeouts. He allowed three runs on five hits over six innings. He walked one.

Boyd has allowed three runs or less in eight straight starts. In that stretch, he has a 2.44 ERA (12 earned runs over 441/3 innings).

He has struck out seven batters in three starts this season, twice against the Twins.

Boyd gave up a solo home run to Robbie Grossman in the third inning. Dozier added his 30th home run of the season in the fifth for the Twins.

The Tigers gave second baseman Ian Kinsler, 0-for-15 in his last four games and 5-for-51 over his 13, a day off. Andrew Romine started at second instead and finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBis.

The Tigers added three runs in the eighth inning, a two-run single by Romine and an RBI single by Cameron Maybin.

Right-handed pitcher Tyler Duffey allowed six runs on seven hits over three innings for the Twins. He gave up an intentional walk and struck out two.

Shane Greene allowed a run on two hits and a walk in the eighth inning for the Tigers. Greene has allowed eight runs on 10 hits in his last four outings, each one inning.
