DETROIT _ Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Trevor Williams was effectively wild, pitching six hitless innings against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. It was the first hitless appearance of his major league career.
The Tigers finished with just two hits in a 1-0 loss to the Pirates in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.
Nick Castellanos' hit a double into the left field corner off righty Michael Feliz with one out in the seventh for the Tigers' first hit. Dixon Machado had a single in the eighth inning.
Williams now has a 13-inning scoreless streak against the Tigers. He limited them to seven scoreless innings in a combined one-hitter in a 3-0 win on Aug. 8, 2017, at PNC Park.
The Tigers worked Williams to four consecutive full counts in the fifth inning, but failed to score. Williams gave up a leadoff walk to Castellanos. After Victor Martinez grounded out to third, Williams gave up a walk to John Hicks. Then Mikie Mahtook lined out to center and Jose Iglesias flied out to right.
Williams was 7-9 with a 4.07 ERA and 31 games for the Pirates last season, including 25 starts.
