Tigers' Miguel Cabrera wins 7th Silver Slugger Award

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. _ Miguel Cabrera is a Silver Slugger.

The Detroit Tigers' first baseman won his seventh Silver Slugger Award on Thursday afternoon, as voted on by managers and coaches.

In 2016, Cabrera hit .316 with 38 home runs and 108 RBIs. It was one of the more quiet seasons of that caliber in recent memory, with the future Hall of Famer not gathering much attention for another incredible offensive performance.

Cabrera's seventh Silver Slugger ties him for seventh-most since the award was introduced in 1980. Barry Bonds won 12, Mike Piazza and Alex Rodriguez won 10 each, Wade Boggs, Cal Ripken and Manny Ramirez won eight each and seven players have won seven each.

It is his fourth Silver Slugger in the past five seasons. He has won in both the AL and NL, and at three different positions _ left field, third base and first base.

Cabrera, 33, is a lifetime .321 hitter in 14 seasons, with 446 home runs. He is signed through the 2020 season at a price of $220 million.
