CLEVELAND _ Justin Verlander delivered in a must-win game for the Detroit Tigers.
But the Tigers went on to lose, 1-0, in the bottom of the 10th to the Indians Saturday at Progressive Field. It was the 13th time in 14 meetings this season that the Tigers lost to the Tribe. The Tigers will try to avoid being swept on Sunday.
Jose Ramirez singled on a grounder up the middle to score Jason Kipnis and give the Indians a walk-off win.
Justin Wilson gave up a leadoff walk to Carlos Santana. Santana was tagged out at second by Jose Iglesias after a bunt by Kipnis. With Francisco Lindor batting, Kipnis went to second on a wild pitch, then stole third. Wilson walked Lindor, then intentionally walked Mike Napoli to load the bases, leaving it up to Ramirez.
Verlander allowed one hit and four walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out seven and threw 106 pitches.
Verlander matched his season-high with four walks, but didn't allow a hit to the Indians until the bottom of the sixth, a leadoff single by Kipnis with no outs. Kipnis was batting 5-for-49 (.102) before getting the hit to break up Verlander's no-hit bid.
Alex Wilson faced runners at second and third with one out in the eighth after giving up a walk to Santana and a ground-rule double to Kipnis. Wilson got Lindor to strike out swinging at a slider. Wilson fell behind, 2-0, to Napoli, but got him to strike out looking at a 93-mph fastball.
Bruce Rondon gave up a two-out single to Tyler Naquin in the bottom of the ninth. Rajai Davis came on to pinch run and stole his 39th base of the season. The Tigers intentionally walked Abraham Almonte. With Lonnie Chisenhall slated to pinch-hit for Roberto Perez, the Tigers brought in Justin Wilson. The Indians then pinch-hit Brandon Guyer for Chisenhall. The Indians put runners on second and third with a double steal. But Guyer grounded out to third.
The Tigers had a runner on third with one out in the sixth inning and failed to score. Jose Iglesias was hit by a pitch, then stole second. Iglesias advanced to third when Ian Kinsler grounded out to short. Iglesias didn't score when Cameron Maybin popped out to second baseman Jason Kipnis. Iglesias also didn't try to score on a sinker in the dirt that got away from catcher Roberto Perez. The Indians went on to intentionally walk Miguel Cabrera, who was already 2-for-2. But Victor Martinez struck out on a 91-mph fastball from right-hander Perci Garner.
The Tigers forced the Indians into a bullpen game two pitches into the game. Right-handed starter Carlos Carrasco suffered a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal on his right hand after being hit by a liner from leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler.
The Indians athletic trainer spent several minutes with Carrasco on the mound before it was determined that he couldn't continue. Carrasco was taken to the hospital for X-rays and the Indians announced the fracture in the top of the seventh inning.
The Tigers managed two three hits over the first five innings. Cabrera had a double in the first inning and a single in the fourth.
Verlander walked the first two batters he faced in the second inning. But with runners on second and third with one out, he escaped the jam. He struck out Naquin and got Abraham Almonte to pop out to third.
Verlander walked two more batters in the third inning, but got Napoli to strike out swinging to end that threat.
