Tigers end Handscomb's gritty Shield knock

Tasmania have ended Peter Handscomb's gritty knock with the Victorians 6-130 at lunch on day two of their Sheffield Shield clash at the MCG.

Resuming on 52 on Saturday with the Vics 3-70 in reply to the visitors' first innings total of 188, the Victorian skipper was unable to press on to record a 16th first-class century.

He departed on 73 when Nathan Ellis produced a superb ball that nipped back, took the glove and was caught behind by Jake Doran.

Nightwatchman Scott Boland was out soon after for three, caught by Jarrod Freeman at cover off the bowling of stand-in skipper Jackson Bird, who took his 400th first-class wicket.

Seb Gotch (5) played a rash shot 15 minutes before lunch, dancing down the pitch to Freeman, only to sky the ball to Mac Wright.

Jake Fraser-McGurk (27) and James Pattinson (0) will resume after lunch.

Bird has been the pick of the Tasmanian bowlers with 3-30 from 17 overs.

The Tigers, who lost captain Tim Paine to illness before the start of the match, suffered more injury drama when Peter Siddle copped a blow to his left thumb.

The quick, who broke the same thumb playing for the Adelaide Strikers in the recent BBL season, left the ground for treatment but was able to return to the attack.
