Tigers' Cabrera rewards young fan for ditching Trout jersey

DETROIT _ Miguel Cabrera wasn't fond of the Mike Trout jersey a young fan was wearing at Tuesday night's Detroit Tigers game.

So the fan put on a Cabrera jersey instead _ and was rewarded with Cabrera's bat.

During the third inning of the Tigers' 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, Cabrera was taking practice swings in the on-deck circle when he noticed a boy in the Comerica Park stands wearing a Tigers cap, but a red Trout jersey.

In a humorous exchange, Cabrera gestured to the boy that he had the wrong jersey on. Conveniently, the boy also had a white Cabrera jersey with him at the park.

So the boy took the Cabrera jersey, put it on over his Trout jersey and gestured toward Cabrera, as if to say, "look!"

Cabrera could only smile.

According to MLB.com, the young fan _ 8-year-old Griffin Majeski from Lake Orion _ received Cabrera's bat as a reward for the jersey switch.

So why did Majeski have a Cabrera jersey and a Trout jersey? He was at the park with a friend and their parents, and each had the jerseys "to emulate their heroes," according to MLB.com.

Hence, Trout and Cabrera, the two players who duked it out for the American League MVP award over the past several seasons. Cabrera won it in 2012 and 2013; Trout won it in 2014 and 2016.
