TORONTO _ The offense and the bullpen were to blame for the latest Detroit Tigers' loss, not Mike Pelfrey.
The Tigers lost, 6-0, to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night at Rogers Centre.
Pelfrey allowed one run on six hits over six innings as he fell to 2-8. He walked three and struck out two and went deeper than Blue Jays lefty J.A. Happ, who entered the game with an 11-3 record.
Happ allowed six hits over 52/3 scoreless innings for the Blue Jays. He walked one and struck out nine.
Kevin Pillar's RBI double off Kyle Ryan in the seventh scored Justin Smoak to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.
The Jays scored four runs in the seventh inning off Kyle and Bobby Parnell.
Mark Lowe gave up a run in the eighth inning on a sac fly to right by Ex-Tiger Ezequiel Carrera that scored Pillar.
Pelfrey allowed a baserunner in each inning before giving up a run in the fifth inning.
Pelrey gave up a single and two walks in the second inning. A walk to Pillar loaded the bases with two outs. But Pelfrey fielded a grounder from Darwin Barney to get out of the jam.
Barney led off the bottom of the fifth with a double on a ground ball into left past a diving Nick Castellanos. Carrera followed with a single to center. Barney didn't try to score on the hit, but came home when Josh Donaldson grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.
Pillar's RBI double off Ryan gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-out, three-run home run to center off Parnell to give the Jays a five-run cushion.
It was the seventh time in Pelfrey's 17 starts the Tigers have scored three or fewer runs.
The Tigers did get base hits in each of the first three innings. But Happ struck out six of the first nine batters he faced, including Ian Kinsler and Miguel Cabrera in the first inning. After giving up a single to Castellanos to lead off the second, Happ struck out the next three batters: Justin Upton, James McCann and Mike Aviles.
Kinsler struck out for the second time in the third inning, giving Happ four consecutive strikeouts.
Cabrera led off with a single in the sixth, but Victor Martinez popped up to shortstop after a 10-pitch at-bat. Castellanos struck out for the second time. Happ's night ended after he gave up his first walk of the game _ to Upton, who had struck out in his first two at-bats.
Happ threw 109 pitches and allowed six hits with nine strikeouts.
The Blue Jays brought in right-hander Jesse Chavez to face McCann, who singled to left to load the bases with two outs. Ausmus had Steven Moya available on the bench to pinch-hit, but stayed with Aviles, who grounded to short for a force out to end the threat.
