Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Northern Trust with an oblique strain, the 15-time major champion confirmed ahead of his second round on Friday.
The announcement comes after Woods spent this week plagued by injury and was left unable to practice properly ahead of the event - the first tournament in the FedEx Cup playoffs.
He then shot a four-over par in his opening round on Thursday and looked set to miss the cut in just his fifth event since winning The Masters back in April.
“Due to a mild oblique strain that led to pain and stiffness, I have to withdraw from The Northern Trust. I went for treatment early Friday morning, but unfortunately I’m still unable to compete,” Woods said in a statement.
“I’d like to thank the New Jersey and New York fans for their support and remain hopeful I can compete at hte BMW Championship.”
Woods intends to return in time to compete at Medinah next week, however, if he is unable to he will be knocked out of the season-ending series.
