Tiger Woods will face no criminal charges over California car crash as sheriff rules out alcohol involvement

Tiger Woods will face no criminal charges over the car crash which left him hospitalised, authorities have confirmed.

The golf star was seriously injured in Tuesday’s crash in California, which occurred on a downhill stretch of road notorious for accidents and did not involve any other vehicles.

Woods suffered a fractured leg and shattered ankle and has subsequently had surgery, including the insertion of screws and pins to stabilise the joint, leaving his playing career in doubt.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva confirmed that the crash was “purely an accident” and saw no reason to suspect that Woods had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“A reckless driving charge has a lot of elements into it, this is purely an accident,” Villanueva told reporters.

“He was not drunk,” he added. “We can throw that one out.”

Woods had been on the road to recovery following a fifth back surgery and hoping to be fit in time to play at the Masters at August in April.
