Tiger Woods to lead 'star-studded exhibition match' alongside Rory McIlroy

Tiger Woods is reportedly set to team up with Rory McIlroy in a star-studded line-up in the latest instalment of 'The Match'.

Woods has only played in three competitions this year and continues to struggle with the impact of the injuries sustained in a car crash in 2021.

After the Open in July, he dismissed suggestions he would retire and vowed to manage his body in order to appear on the course before the end of the year. And the 15-time Major winner could be back in December after signing up to play 12 holes at the Pelican Club in Florida, reports Golf Digest.

It is claimed Woods and McIlroy will join forces to take on Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth under the floodlights on December 10. The pair recently partnered for a new technology company.

Woods has already appeared in The Match twice, first facing off against Phil Mickelson in 2018 in the competition's inaugural event. The American returned in 2020 alongside NFL star Peyton Manning to defeat Mickelson and Tom Brady.

Speculation remains over whether Woods will take part in his own tournament, the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, the week before The Match.

Discussing his fitness after the Open, Woods admitted: "People have no idea what I have to go through and the hours of the work on the body, pre and post, each and every single day to do what I just did.

“That's what people don't understand. They don't see. And then you think about playing more events on top of that, it's hard enough just to do what I did.

“It's a struggle just playing the three events I played this year. That in itself was something I'm very proud of. I was able to play these three events, considering what has transpired."
