FARMINGDALE, N.Y. _ Tiger Woods looks like he has a Masters hangover. Brooks Koepka is in great position to defend his PGA Championship.
The crowd roared for Tiger, when he gave them something to cheer about, on Thursday during the first round of the PGA Championship on Thursday at Bethpage Black. Koepka, playing in the same group as Woods, dominated the morning wave.
Woods, coming off his stunning Masters win last month, got off to a shaky start, making double bogey on No. 10, his first hole of the day. Tiger made another double on 17 and shot an opening-9 38.
Koepka birdied No. 10 and never let up, making seven birdies without a bogey to take the early lead with a 7-under 63, his lowest round in a PGA Championship.
Woods played a roller-coaster round and finished 2-over 72, nine shots behind Koepka.
Tiger got hot as he made the turn, making birdies on the first and second. When he made eagle on No. 4, and Koepka struggled to make par, it seemed like there was a momentum shift.
Not so much.
Woods followed that hot stretch with bogeys on 5, 7 and 8.
Tommy Fleetwood played himself into the morning mix with a 3-under 67, four shots back of Koepka.
