Tiger Woods skips Wells Fargo Championship with next major looming

Tiger Woods vowed to play a lighter schedule in 2019 after a hectic season last year, and the reigning Masters champion has elected to skip what many analysts and fans expected to be a final tune-up before the upcoming PGA Championship.

The PGA Tour will visit Quail Hollow in North Carolina next week for the Wells Fargo Championship, an event Woods has played several times during his career and won back in 2007. With only three weeks until the second major of the year, the Wells Fargo was the last event Woods was likely to play, considering he historically doesn’t tee it up competitively the week before major championships.

Woods did not commit to play at Quail Hollow by Friday’s 5:00 p.m. ET deadline, and the tournament director confirmed that Woods will not be a part of the field.

Following the Wells Fargo Championship, the tour will stop in Texas for the Byron Nelson Classic, preceding the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black, beginning May 16th. Woods’ first round at Bethpage should be his first in competition since winning the Masters earlier this month.
