Tiger Woods shoots 3-over par in second round at Genesis Invitational, likely to make cut

The golf world will likely get its first look of the year at Sunday red this weekend. Tiger Woods will likely make the cut at the Genesis Invitational, according to DataGolf.com, as second-round play was suspended due to darkness. The 47-year-old shot a 3-over par 74 on Friday, bringing his tournament total to 1-over through two rounds.

The 47-year-old bogeyed three of his final four holes — he began the round on the back nine and finished on the front — to put him on the cusp of having the weekend off. The 15-time major champion displayed some powerful drives registering above-average ball speed off the tee, however, it was the putting surface that gave him the most trouble on Saturday.

“I did not putt well today, I blocked a lot of putts early and this is probably the highest score I could have shot today,’’ Woods said after the round. “Probably should have shot five or six better than this easily. Just didn’t make the putts early and the middle part of the round when I had those opportunities. And they weren’t very hard putts, I just hit bad putts and obviously had a very bad finish, too.”

Woods — who had to publicly apologize for handing Justin Thomas a tampon after he outdrove him on Thursday — is playing in his first competitive tournament since the British Open at St Andrews last summer as he continues to recover from a car crash that nearly cost him his legs.

The 82-time PGA Tour winner is 12 shots behind leader Max Homa (-11). Jon Rahm (-9) and Colin Morikawa (-8) are also near the top of the leaderboard entering the weekend.

Woods’ playing partners experienced some mixed results. Rory McIlroy (-6) shot 2-under and is in contention entering Saturday, however, Justin Thomas (-1) checked in with a 2-over-par 72 as the World Ranked No. 7 had a tough afternoon.
