Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day given Japanese lesson ahead of The Challenge

Tiger Woods , Rory McIlroy and Jason Day were summoned back to school by head teacher Hideki Matsuyama for a Japanese lesson they’ll never forget to help them prepare for their arrival in Japan later this month.

The three golfers were treated to a language lesson with a difference as they were taught everything from key golfing terms to understanding the local culture and customs of Japan.

Hideki puts his pupils through their paces whilst warning against public displays of frustration and the importance of respecting their elders.

In the video shared online, the three players gently poke fun at each other as the class progresses.

"Do we really need to do this class?" says McIlroy, before Day replies "Hey, do you think Hideki even finished school?" before Woods adds "No way, he was a childhood prodigy, right?"

This is before Matsuyama shocks them by saying "I can speak English, guys."

Day, who can't help himself, has a bit of fun saying: "What’s the phrase for, 'I just outdrove you by 20 yards?'"

Matsuyama replies in English saying "Repeat after me," then in Japanese, saying "You’re not going to need to know that."

At the end of the video, after five hours have passed, Woods and day are fluent in Japanese, but McIlroy, who is sleeping, has not learnt a word.

Woods, not missing the opportunity, says in Japanese "I think I’m fluent now! Rory, you’re going to lose, right?"

To which McIlroy gives a confused look and eventually replies in English "Yeah, sure!"

All four players - Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Hideki Matsuyama – will go head-to-head in The Challenge: Japan Skins in a unique event to be streamed in full exclusively and free on GOLFTV* internationally and will be sure to thrill millions of golf fans around the world.

*Due to existing rights agreements in the UK and Ireland, fans will be required to subscribe to watch The Challenge. Passes start at £4.99/month. In the U.S., The Challenge: Japan Skins can be viewed live on Golf Channel
