Perspective is sometimes needed in strange times such as these. As uncertainty over the coronavirus continued to fill news feeds on Monday, Tiger Woods was among the celebrities to weigh in with a calming reminder of what’s important.
The golf world hadn’t heard from Woods – through his social media account, at least – since he tweeted March 6 that he would not be teeing it up at the Players Championship. As it turned out, that event only lasted 18 holes. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan canceled it on March 12 as he also announced the next three weeks on the Tour’s schedule would be dark due to coronavirus precautions. Augusta National postponed the Masters shortly after.
Woods sent what was perhaps a needed reminder on Monday as the sports world was essentially dark.
Woods’ message sounded similar to a public service announcement featuring Jack Nicklaus that was shared on Florida Senator Rick Scott’s social-media accounts on Sunday night. Nicklaus, at 80 years old, is among the at-risk population of seniors. In a sit-down, face-the-camera video message, he encouraged citizens to be safe and be smart above all.
In a sports world filled with uncertainty, there is perhaps one constant. With the Masters postponed for the forseeable future, Woods remains the reigning champion.
