Tiger Woods makes major Saturday surge at Riviera

Tiger Woods finished his opening two rounds at Riviera just a shot inside the cut line and told reporters that his work on the greens in his first round was “as bad as a human can possibly putt,” but the 80-time PGA Tour winner finally came to life Saturday afternoon in the third round.

Weather delays wreaked havoc on the Genesis Open’s schedule, and Woods didn’t take the course for his third round until 6:40 p.m. ET – and Woods will be wishing that he had more daylight to work with. Starting on the back nine, Woods opened the round birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie. On the 570-yard par-5, Woods bombed a 320 yard drive into the fairway and hit a spectacular approach shot to just inside 10 feet. He drilled the putt to quickly drop to 4-under for the tournament.

Woods just missed the fairway with his shot off the 12th tee, and his second shot left him 21 feet from the hole. CBS’ Jim Nantz lost it when Woods rolled in the birdie putt.

On the next hole, Woods got a 14-foot putt to drop, and the massive gallery following his group erupted.

Woods vaulted himself 40 places up the leaderboard into a tie for 12th in just four holes, but Woods still trails leaders Justin Thomas and Adam Scott by five shots.
