After grinding out a win against Aaron Wise Wednesday, Tiger Woods took a considerable step back in his match on Thursday.
Woods lost 2&1 to Brandt Snedeker in his second match of the week at Austin Country Club in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. It came down to the 17th hole, where like the majority of his round, Woods was unable to make a timely birdie.
Both players weren’t at their best, especially Woods early on the front nine. Woods made just two birdies to Snedeker’s four, and made the turn at 1-down.
Some heroics followed on the back, starting under a bush on the par-4 10th hole. Woods was able to save par and avoid dropping another hole thanks to a miraculous left-handed chip from his knees.
Fast-forward to the 14th hole, where Tiger found the beach to the left of the fairway. “Never saw it,” Woods said to caddie Joe LaCava as his ball went right at the pin. That birdie was Woods’ lone hole below par on the back nine.
Snedeker, who tied Patrick Cantlay Wednesday, led for 13 of the match’s 17 holes and never gave up his lead on the back nine.
