Tiger Woods Faces Career Uncertainty After DUI Crash and Sudden Treatment Decision

Tiger Woods revealed plans of stepping away from golf and seeking treatment after getting involved in another car-related incident. Woods' latest vehicle-related case is the fourth he has had since 2009.

A breath test taken by the Martin County Jail showed he had 0.000 on both samples, indicating no alcohol was detected. However, authorities found prescription opioids in his pocket.

The 15-time major winner refused to submit to a urine test to determine the presence of chemical or controlled substances, leading to his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) on 27 March. Woods has pleaded not guilty to the DUI charges.

Aware of the mess he is in, Woods announced plans to step away from golf to seek treatment. The 50-year-old golfer released a statement on social media.

'I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery,' Woods said on X. '

'I'm committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time,' he added.

Woods Signs of Impairment Spotted

Despite passing the breath test conducted by Martin County Jail personnel, deputies noticed signs of impairment in Woods after the crash. This included sweating profusely, slow movement and extremely dilated eyes.

Woods was driving his Land Rover at the time but ended up hitting a pickup truck that was pulling a trailer. The collision forced Woods' vehicle to roll onto its side, CNN reported.

When asked what he remembers, Woods admitted that he was distracted before the crash. He shared that he was looking down at his cellphone and changing radio stations at the time, not noticing that there was a vehicle in front of him that was slowing down, Fox News reported.

What is Woods Avoiding?

After passing the breathalyser test, Woods' refusal to submit to a urine test is a bit off. Was he worried that authorities may find traces of opioids? With the opioids found reportedly prescribed, Tiger had no reason to worry.

Also, many opioids tend to have short half-lives according to American Addiction Centers. They usually leave the system quickly although effects could last for several hours. Taken orally, the opioid must pass through the digestive system first so that the effects won't be immediate.

Hence, Woods' refusal to take a urine test is a mystery. However, it also places him in a crucial spot.

Under the Implied Consent Law in Florida, anyone driving in the state is expected to consent to breath, urine or blood tests when they are lawfully arrested for alleged DUI. Refusal to do so is considered a second-degree misdemeanor for first-time offenders.

The sanctions include a $500 (£375) fine, 60 days in jail and a one-year driver's licence suspension according to Lawrence Meltzer, an attorney who specialises in DUI cases.
