SAN DIEGO _ It shouldn't come as a surprise, but it's still good news for the Farmers Insurance Open: Tiger Woods has committed to play in the 2017 tournament, Jan. 26-29 at Torrey Pines.
Woods, a seven-time winner of the PGA Tour event and an eight-time champion at Torrey Pines including his 2008 U.S. Open triumph, will be making his 2017 debut here, the Century Club announced Wednesday.
Woods, who turned 41 last week, last played the Farmers in 2015, when he withdrew on the 12th hole of his first round due to a back injury. He won the tournament in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2013.
The Farmers will mark Woods' first appearance in a full-field PGA Tour event since August 2015. Last month he played in the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas and finished 15th in the 18-man field.
Hideki Matsuyama, who won that event, is one of several early commitments to the Farmers. Others include world No. 1 Jason Day, U.S. Open champ and 2016 Tour Player of the Year Dustin Johnson, PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker, defending tournament champion Brandt Snedeker, Olympic gold medalist Justin Rose and a pair of Ryder Cup players with local ties, Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson. The latter's participation is in some question; Mickelson underwent hernia surgery in October and again in December.
