Tiger Roll's owner delivers retirement bombshell after historic Grand National win

Tiger Roll's owner Michael O’Leary has revealed he may not come back to Aintree for the 2020 Grand National.

The nine-year-old made history on Saturday evening as he claimed back-to-back Grand Nationals in fine style as he saw off competition from Magic of Light.

In doing so he became the first horse to win consecutive Grand National races after also romping home in 2018.

The 4/1 favourite is now expected to come back again to make even more history but it seems that his owner O'Leary potentially has other plans.

Asked if he was planning to bring Tiger Roll back next year, he explained to ITV Racing: "Honestly I expect not.

"We haven't discussed it yet. He'll go up again in the weights, he's not the biggest horse.

Jockey Davy Russell reveals Red Rum inspiration after Tiger Roll's historic Grand National win

"I think the objective this year was the Cross Country at Cheltenham. We'll bring him back to that next year. If he wins that, I'll retire him."

O'Leary had declared before the race that he 'no confidence' in the horse winning again and admitted that it was a shock result.

“We haven't made history. Tiger Roll and Gordon Elliott and Davy Russell have made history. We're just very happy participants,” he said.

“It's incredible. I thought we had no chance today, the history says you don’t win two in a row. What a horse. He keeps coming out, he keeps winning and he keeps improving. I can't believe it.”
