Tierney's battle, Saka celebration - five things spotted from Arsenal training

Arsenal's Europa League campaign continues this evening in an unprecedented style, with the Gunners tackling Benfica in the Round of 32 stage and both matches being played in neutral venues.

Mikel Arteta's side have travelled to Rome for the first leg and the reverse fixture next week, Arsenal's 'home' tie, will be played in Athens.

That presents a new challenge for Arsenal, particularly as the games fall alongside difficult Premier League matches against Manchester City and Leicester City.

Arsenal did at least return to winning ways at the weekend by defeating Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium, with spirits high following that triumph.

As usual, Arsenal have been training ahead of the game against Benfica and we've identified five things spotted from the training video as well as the latest pictures.

Tierney battle

Kieran Tierney has missed Arsenal's last five Premier League matches through injury, as well as the FA Cup defeat to Southampton, but is finally closing in on a return.

The Scotland international has been involved in first-team training with Arteta's side this week, providing a timely boost heading into a crucial stage of the season.

However, it is unlikely that he will start the match as Arteta's latest update confirmed his involvement recently has been limited: "Kieran has one session with us and he’s part of the squad."

Arsenal may be patient with Tierney's recovery, which may see him not feature this evening and potentially not risked for Sunday's clash with Manchester City.

Saka celebration

Bukayo Saka has been in excellent form for Arsenal this season and remains a crucial player heading into a pivotal stage of the campaign.

Perhaps surprisingly, he has not scored in the Europa League this season though and his last goal in any competition came almost a month ago against Southampton.

That's not to say that Saka is enduring a blip, as he was a stand-out performer in the weekend's victory against Leeds, but it seems he is preparing to be on the scoresheet again.

Saka was pictured sliding on his knees in Arsenal's training session, then falling onto his back - perhaps practising a celebration he plans to use if he finds the net against Benfica.

Nelson and Elneny

Reiss Nelson and Mohamed Elneny are two players who have not featured recently for Arsenal but their spirits seem to remain high.

As spotted in a behind-the-scenes of Arsenal's training session, the pair, jokingly, square up to each other in Boxing stances, with the former hitting the latter in the face before running off.

Elneny doesn't quite get revenge on the winger as despite catching up with Nelson, he just gives him a little tap on the back before the pair resume their mini-scuffle.

Calum Chambers

Another player who has not been involved recently and one that can perhaps be considered to be a forgotten man, Calum Chambers' last involvement came in the final Europa League group-stage match back in December.

While he has continued to be involved in training since then, he was a particular focus for the cameraman this week as there were a number of pictures of the England international.

Chambers' future at Arsenal is under intense scrutiny but if Arteta decides to rotate his defensive options, the former Southampton man may be given a rare opportunity against Benfica.

Aubameyang's confidence

It's fair to say that many Arsenal fans expected Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's goal tally this season to be higher but he has only just hit double figures in all competitions.

Fortunately, the signs are good as Aubameyang's first start since January 18th at the weekend saw the Gunners' captain net a hat-trick, his first in the Premier League, to see off Leeds.

That puts the experienced forward in fine form, as it means he has scored five goals in his last two starts - and he was looking confident in training ahead of the clash against Benfica.
