Tier warning for Leeds as 8,000 school children and 600 teachers self-isolating

Almost 8,000 school kids in Leeds are currently self-isolating due to coronavirus.

The shocking figure highlighting the scale of the virus in the city was published by Councillor Paul Wray as part of his weekly online updates.

The update published on November 14, also shows how there are more than 600 school staff members are also isolating with 34 secondary school and 103 primary schools in the city with live cases.

He also revealed that 42 care homes and a hospice have reported coronavirus cases.

Cllr Wray, of the Hunslet and Riverside Ward, added in the update the “pattern of outbreaks is what we would expect given the level of community transmission across the city”.

The blog reads: “There are 42 care homes and one hospice in Leeds reporting cases of Covid-19 and eight business premises with cases reported. All services continue to work proactively to support these settings.

“The current position in schools is that there are: 7,999 students are self-isolating; 607 staff members are self-isolating; 119 Bubbles or year groups have been collapsed; 34 secondary schools have live cases; 103 primary schools have live cases; three special schools/sites have live cases.

“We know that this second lockdown is particularly hard for many people and businesses. With our infection rate at 441 per 100,000 and positivity standing at 15.8 per cent, the expectation is that at the end of the second lockdown on the 2nd December, Leeds will re-enter a tier with restrictions unless case rates and positivity changes dramatically.”
