Tier decision for Nottinghamshire may not be announced until tomorrow

The decision on Nottinghamshire's tier may not be announced publicly until Thursday, December 17.

The Government is meeting today to review the tier system across England - but the formal announcement is now not expected until tomorrow.

Alex Norris, MP for Nottingham North, said: “We expect the decision to be made today but that we won’t be formally told until tomorrow. Nottingham businesses need maximum time to prepare so the government should tell us as soon as they know.”

Most of the country was placed in the higher Tier 2 and Tier 3 rackets when England left lockdown on December 2, and this week London was escalated to Tier 3 along with parts of Essex and Hertfordshire.

According to the PA news agency a 'formal announcement (is) expected tomorrow'.

Earlier this week, doubts were cast over the chances of Nottinghamshire being placed under Tier 2 restrictions, which would mean that pubs and restaurants could open to serve alcohol with food.

Jonathan Gribbin, Director of Public Health for Nottinghamshire, said: "Along with the relaxation of measures over Christmas period, in January we anticipate the phased return of students to the city.

"I think there are a number of headwinds which would, in my opinion, make it quite challenging for the Government in terms of the consideration it is giving to Tier 2."

A call is being held at 10am to discuss whether the relaxation of the rules should be changed or scrapped.
