Tier 4 Covid guidance: what the 'most extreme' version of Scottish Covid restrictions will involve

Venues such as gyms, bars, pubs and hairdressers would be required to close if Edinburgh is placed in Tier Four of the Scottish Government's new five tiered coronavirus system.

Tier Four, the highest level of the government's new system which runs from 0 to 4, will be the closest to the full lockdown Scotland experienced earlier this year, with all businesses considered 'non-essential' required to close their doors to the public.

However, six people from two households would still be allowed to meet outdoors, there would be no limit on outdoor exercise and they would hope to keep construction and manufacturing open.

The Scottish Government said of the highest tier: "Within this level we would expect to see very high or rapidly increasing incidence, and widespread community transmission which may pose a threat to the NHS to cope.

"It is likely that this level would see the introduction of measures close to a return to full lockdown. Measures would be designed to be in place for a short period, to provide a short, sharp response to quickly suppress the virus."

The new framework is set to come into effect on Monday 2 November, but only if MSPs approve it, with Scots left in the dark over which tier their area is in until that date.

Nicola Sturgeon added in her daily coronavirus briefing today that there is no plan to return to the type of full lockdown seen in March, will the goal being to to keep schools open.
