Tier 3 expected on Monday, says Nottinghamshire's Crime Commissioner

Nottinghamshire's Police and Crime Commissioner said 'the expectation' is that parts of the county will put under Tier 3 local lockdown restriction by Monday.

Paddy Tipping said talks are currently underway with Public Health Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and Public Health England over the new restrictions.

Nottingham and Nottinghamshire was placed under Tier 2 'high alert' local lockdown restrictions on Monday, October 12.

It means households cannot mix indoors but the rule of six applies outdoors, with bars, pubs and restaurants remaining open.

But under the Tier 3 restrictions, businesses such as pubs and bars that don't serve substantial meals will automatically close.

Nottingham City Council said no meetings are scheduled yet with Government ministers about moving to Tier 3 despite the Prime Minister telling the nation talks with the county are "continuing".

But Mr Tipping said "the expectation is we will go into Tier 3" and that it "could be on Monday" when it comes into force.

He is aware that the health secretary Matt Hancock will be having discussions with council leaders by the end of this week.

He said: "It would be the city, Gedling, Rushcliffe and Broxtowe that would go into Tier 3 - that seems to be the focus of the discussion but nothing has been decided yet."

Mr Tipping said the police would be calling on a package of support to police the city and county when it moves into Tier 3. They are asking for £1m.

He said: "There has been these arrangements about money in Greater Manchester and we will make a bid. To police this properly we would need £1m.

"We get lots of calls about house parties and we need police out and about around the tram stops when people are going home.

"It will be for extra high visibility patrols."

Public Health Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have been contacted for a comment, but no comment is being issued until more detail is known.

It is understood that internal meetings within the county council have taken place but there have been no meetings with Government ministers.
