Tier 3 confirmed for Leeds as city faces toughest level of coronavirus restrictions

Leeds will be placed into Tier 3 once the country comes out of its national lockdown next week.

The government has published a list of all areas which will be placed under the strict new rules from December 2, with Leeds among them.

In fact, much of West Yorkshire will also be facing the tightest level of localised coronavirus restrictions in the lead-up to Christmas.

It comes as part of Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Covid Winter Plan which will see a tougher tiered system applied to areas across the country.

News that Leeds could be moving into Tier 3 was 'leaked' yesterday (November 25) and council leader Judith Blake said in an email to MPs and councillors that the news was "anticipated".

And it has been confirmed this morning, with the city set to move into Tier 3 once the second national coronavirus lockdown ends on December 2.

It means, pubs and restaurants will be forced to close unless they can offer delivery and takeaway services.

Separate households will be banned from mixing indoors, in hospitality venues and private gardens.

The rule of six will apply in outdoor public spaces, such as parks, and residents will be advised against travelling in and out of the area.

Hairdressers and 'personal care' services will be permitted.

Being placed in Tier 3 also means Leeds and surrounding areas will be eligible for rapid 'lateral flow' coronavirus testing, with results available in around 20 minutes without the need for a lab.

Yesterday, Leeds recorded 255 new coronavirus cases. with 1,831 recorded across Yorkshire.

The government will review the tier allocations for the first time by December 16, with hopes areas showing signs of a slowing infection rate can be moved down a tier by Christmas.
