Tidy Towns 2021 winners announced as Ennis, Co Clare claims top prize after year break due to Covid-19

The Tidy Towns winners of 2021 have been announced after the competition was unable to go ahead last year.

Ennis, Co Clare was crowned Ireland’s tidiest town, taking the place of the 2019 winner, Glaslough in Co. Monaghan.

It’s not the town's first time to receive the award as they won in 2005.

Two years ago, Ennis won the title of one of Ireland’s tidiest large urban centre and had previously won seven times since the category was introduced in 2006.

Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys, and Ian Allen, Managing Director of sponsors SuperValu and Centra, attended the award show in the RDS, where the winners were announced on Friday.

Geashill in Co Offaly was named Ireland's Tidiest Village, Abbeyleix, Co Laois was awarded Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town and Cobh in Co Cork was named Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town.

The Ennis Tidy Towns Committee chairperson, Mary Howard, said all of the many volunteers were "very, very happy".

She said: "This is our All-Ireland. We've worked very hard for this, in the last few years especially."

Ms Howard said the last year and a half had been challenging for the volunteers and said receiving the award was ‘amazing’ for everyone involved.

She said: "It’s great, we’re delighted. It’s all about all of our volunteers, they’ve put in the hours."

"This is a fantastic achievement for Ennis, who are very deserving winners," Minister Heather Humphreys said.

"Ennis first entered the SuperValu TidyTowns competition in 1959 and continue to showcase all that is good about community and volunteerism.

"Given the tremendous interest in the competition and the increasing efforts made by all entrants, it is a wonderful achievement to take the national title for a second time; this really demonstrates that resilience and determination do reap rewards."

Minister announced an allocation of €1.5 million in funding to support the work of Tidy Towns groups across the country.

Managing Director of sponsors SuperValu and Centra, Ian Allen, praised all those involved in Tidy Towns, saying: “the public expression of the work countless individuals undertake to build community spirit and make their local area a better place in which to live and work".
