Tickets handed out to drivers parking dangerously and blocking traffic near Dovestone Reservoir

Tickets have been handed out to drivers caught parking dangerously near to Dovestone Reservoir.

Since the UK lockdown measures were eased earlier this month drivers have been allowed to travel by car to parks and outdoor spaces.

United Utilities, which owns the Saddleworth site, reopened its car parks on May 15 after shutting them shortly before lockdown.

But the numbers of cars parking on nearby streets to Dovestone Reservoir have been causing issues for local residents.

Police were alerted to cars seen parked on blind bends on the A635 Holmfirth Road, in Oldham, near to the beauty spot.

A number of cars were also seen to be blocking half of the road, causing passing vehicles to go into the opposite side of the road into oncoming traffic.

There have also been reports of long queues of traffic in the area.

Officers issued a number of tickets to drivers, who face having to pay a fine.

Police are warning drivers they must only park in designated lay-bys or car parks to visit the reservoir.

A statement posted on the Greater Manchester Police Saddleworth and Lees Facebook page said: "Officers from the Neighbourhood team again did traffic enforcement on the A635 Holmfirth Road above Dovestones after multiple calls from the local community were received regarding dangerous parking on the approach to some of the blind bends.

"On arrival officers issued a number of tickets to vehicles with some of them completely blocking half of the road causing passing vehicles to go completely into the opposite side and into on coming traffic.

"We will continue to enforce parking issues on the Holmfirth Road and ask that the following message is shared far and wide.

"The A635 Holmfirth Road is governed by white lines in various forms from single solid lines to double white lines on the bends. Any vehicle parked in contravention of the road markings will be subject of a fine with photographic evidence to support.

"Please do not park along Holmfirth Road except in the designated lay-bys and car parks. We will robustly enforce traffic law at that location and will continue to work with partners and the local community in minimising the chances of a serious accident."
