The Director General of the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Toshiro Muto said ticket revenue is expected to total less than half of the 90 billion yen budgeted for hosting the Games because of the limit on spectators, at a press conference after the five-party meeting on Monday.
Muto also indicated that the organizing committee would hold discussions with the Tokyo metropolitan government and the central government about how to share the costs associated with the loss of revenue.
If each venue has the upper limit of 10,000 spectators, 2.72 million tickets are expected to be sold for the Olympics. By last year, the organizing committee had sold 4.48 million tickets. However, 840,000 tickets were refunded to those who canceled their tickets following the announcement of its postponement. If another lottery is conducted, the current 3.64 million tickets sold will be further reduced by 920,000.
Only a little more than 10% of the sessions, or time slots, will be subject to another lottery. About half of the sessions are expected to sell less than 40% of the available tickets.
