Ticket resellers face government crackdown

Ticket resellers will be forced to disclose the original ticket price under federal government plans to improve consumer protection.

Under draft standards released by Treasury for public comment, ticket resellers would have to display the ticket's face value as well as a statement making it clear that they are not an original ticket seller.

"These changes aim to ensure consumers are informed about who they are purchasing a ticket from and the difference in price for a particular ticket in comparison to the original ticket price," Treasury said. "With this information, consumers will be able to make an informed decision about whether to purchase certain tickets."

The new standards were developed following a decision of the nation's consumer affairs ministers in late 2018 to tighten the rules regarding ticket reselling.

Reselling has become a major market as consumers use online platforms to trade in unwanted or surplus tickets.

But concerns have been raised that often consumers purchase a re-sold ticket under the impression that they are buying from an original ticket seller, and sometimes pay a higher price.

Despite the tighter restrictions, Commonwealth standards are weaker than consumer protection laws in force in most states.

New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland and Victoria have imposed a 10 per cent cap on any price markup for re-sold tickets.
