Tibetan monks in bidding war to buy Loch Ness beauty spot for animal sanctuary

A group of Tibetan Buddhist monks are bidding to snap up a Loch Ness beauty spot to stop animals being hunted.

They were horrified at the prospect of deer carcasses being dragged past their doorstep if a move to turn the land into a hunting estate comes to fruition.

Under the religion’s code of beliefs, Buddhists cannot intentionally harm animals. The community yesterday announced plans to buy the 500-acre site at Balmacaan, near Inverness, and turn it into a wildlife sanctuary.

The Buddhists own a property overlooking the loch, where they are creating a centre for world peace.

Helen MacRae, a spokeswoman for the group, said: “We simply can’t let animals and birds be shot and dragged off the land within yards of our front door.”

The community hopes the company which owns the land, Canadian firm Boralex, will look favourably on their bid.

Helen added: “We hope Boralex’s management will see this is a lovely legacy they can offer to Scotland.”
