Single Scots mum facing homelessness by Christmas after £200 rent hike

Jemma will have to leave her home days before Christmas (Daily Record)

A single mum and her child could be made homeless just days before Christmas after being slapped with a £200 per month rent increase. Jemma Maclaren, 43, was told to move out of her Glasgow home of nine years by December 17, after challenging the rent hike imposed by landlord Kelvin Property.

The mum-of-one has been left "terrified" after learning her digs will be increasing from £695 to £895 per month - a surge of 29 per cent. It comes as thousands of Scots across the country continue to feel the squeeze of the cost of living crisis.

Jemma is desperate not to let the life-changing situation affect her 12-year-old daughter, who will have to move home and school. And she admitted that "Christmas is cancelled" for her family this year.

New bin strikes announced for 20 councils across Scotland as talks set to get underway

Refuse workers hit the picket line in Sheildhall, Glasgow (DAILY RECORD)

Council staff at 20 local authorities across Scotland are set to go on strike for a further eight days next month over a pay dispute.

As the Daily Record reported earlier today talks are set to take place this afternoon after Deputy First Minister John Swinney invited unions and Cosla to St Andrews House in Edinburgh.

Despite "constructive talks" on Wednesday Unite has announced five new councils will join their colleagues on the picket line from September 6 to 13.

Unions and Cosla have failed to reach a pay agreement after a five per cent rise in wages was rejected. Staff at 13 councils, including Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee went on strike yesterday.

A Scots dad has died just four months after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

Murdo Stewart, from Caldercruix near Airdrie, died on August 17 after originally being given 10 months to live in April. His family believe the 55-year-old suffered one of the most rapid deteriorations an MND sufferer has endured after his body shut down within weeks. The average life expectancy of a MND patient is around 18 months.

His wife Lynn, 51, first noticed something could be wrong after Murdo slurred a word in January - and then a few weeks later he muddled up a sentence. Shortly after he was diagnosed on April 10, he lost his ability to speak.

Scots woman shocked after spotting 'big cat' prowling outside her work

Lisa says she initially mistook the predator for a baby dear (Lisa Elliot)

A Scots woman was left shocked after spotting a 'big cat ' prowling outside her work.

Lisa Elliot, 36, initially thought the animal was a baby deer when she first saw the creature moving across a field near the East Lothian village of Pencaitland on Monday August 15, just after 5.30am. The Lothian mum snapped pictures of the large black 'puma-sized' cat when she realised 'what it really was'.

Images show the large black roaming across the field before disappearing into the grass. Lisa, who works nightshifts at the Tyneholm Stables care home, said that this was the first time she or any of her colleagues have seen the black cat.
